Deep Cleaning vs Regular Cleaning: What's the Difference?
Regular cleaning maintains a home that's already in reasonable shape — kitchens, bathrooms, floors, and dusting. Deep cleaning is a top-to-bottom reset that adds baseboards, inside appliances, grout, vents, and behind furniture. Deep cleans take 2 to 3 times longer and are usually the right first visit.
What a regular cleaning covers
A regular house clean is what we do on recurring visits — weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. It covers:
- Kitchens: counters, sink, stovetop, appliance exteriors, floor
- Bathrooms: toilet, tub or shower, sink, mirror, floor
- All rooms: dusting, vacuuming, mopping, trash removal
- General tidying and cobweb removal
Regular cleaning is designed to keep an already-clean home looking great. It's not built to remove months of buildup from grout or the inside of the oven.
What a deep cleaning adds
Deep cleaning includes everything in a regular clean plus:
- Baseboards, door frames, and light switches wiped down
- Inside the oven, microwave, and refrigerator
- Grout, tile, and shower buildup scrubbed
- Vents, blinds, and ceiling fans dusted
- Behind and under accessible furniture
- Detailed attention to corners, edges, and neglected spots
When to book a deep clean
Book a deep clean in any of these situations:
- Before your first recurring appointment (to establish a baseline)
- Moving in or moving out — see our move-in cleaning guide
- Spring cleaning or a seasonal reset
- After renovations, remodels, or a large event
- It's been more than 3 months since the last professional clean
Time and cost difference
A regular clean takes 2 to 4 hours for most homes. A deep clean takes 4 to 8 hours — and sometimes a full day for larger properties in La Cañada Flintridge or Pasadena.
Because deep cleans take 2 to 3 times as long, they cost 2 to 3 times more. The upside: once a deep clean is done, you can maintain the results with lighter, cheaper recurring visits.
Our recommendation
For 90% of new clients, we recommend: deep clean first, then bi-weekly regular visits. This is the pattern that keeps homes consistently spotless without paying deep-clean prices every month.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a deep clean for my first visit?+
For most homes, yes. It gets us to a baseline that we can then maintain with lighter recurring visits.
How often should I book a deep clean?+
Every 3–6 months for most homes. Homes with pets, kids, or heavy cooking often go with every 3 months.
Is a deep clean worth the extra cost?+
For a first visit or a home that hasn't been professionally cleaned in a while, yes. For a home already on a bi-weekly schedule, you can usually stretch deep cleans to every 6 months.
Can I add just one deep-clean item to a regular visit?+
Yes. Add-ons like inside the oven or inside the fridge can be tacked onto any regular clean for a flat fee.
